Follow the 3rd Fighter Aviation Corps along its Combat Path during the Liberation of the Motherland through the experiences of one of its units – the 812th Fighter Aviation Regiment.

Drawing on a comprehensive range of archives, memoirs, and photographs, the authors describe this unit’s daily combat activities in detail from its formative Rzhev-Vyazma days on the doorstep of Moscow, into the pivotal Stalingrad battles, and on through the hard-won victories along the shores of the Sea of Azov – Kuban, Myskhako, Molochnaya – and beyond.

In this volume, part one of the 812th regiment’s combat history reaches its climax with the ejection of the Luftwaffe from its remaining bases near the besieged fortress city of Sevastopol while the Red Army liberates the Crimea from the grip of the Wehrmacht. We leave the 812th – General Savitskiy’s “Dragons on Birds Wings” – as it regroups and prepares for the great drive through Europe where it will end the war in Berlin itself...

High Flight Vol.1 No.2 March/April ‘81

We are fortunate enough to have available for sale the publisher's final inventory of this authoratative – though unfortunately no longer in print – aviation history magazine. Our featured issue carries excellent articles by noted historians Carl Vincent, Dave Fletcher, and Larry Milberry spanning WWI through to the jet age.

Highlights include part 1 of a Canadian WWI ace W.G. Barker biography, thorough coverage of the odd-looking Fleet Fort trainer in text, tables, photos, and drawings, an informative piece on Canada's use of Electronic Warfare aircraft through the cold war era, and a very readable, history of the RCAF's 111 (F) "Thunderbirds" Squadron. Abound with Curtiss Kittyhawk photos, this last one also includes excellent material on the unit's cooperation with the US Army's similarly equipped 11th Pursuit Squadron.

Though outwardly similar to the bomber version of the Liberator, the evolved maritime long range general reconnaissance GR.V was significantly different in detail. For modeling purposes, the most noticeable change was the “dust bin” radar installation that replaced the bomber’s retractable ball turret. This mod was first used on USAAC anti-submarine B-24Ds and carried over to the British “Coastal” version as used by the RAF's Coastal Command and Canada's Eastern Air Command. They saw extensive use during the Battle of the Atlantic and all along the Atlantic coasts of both Europe and Africa where a long-endurance ASW presence was needed.

This Aviaeology decal set comes in either 1/48 or 1/72 scale, with complete markings for 1 of 4 historic aircraft. It also includes a complete set of airframe stencil data, thorough full-colour decalling and painting instructions, plus useful historical and modelling notes.

ASW Liberators pt.1 includes...

• Liberator GR.V (Can) 586-A, 10 (BR) Squadron, RCAF, 1943

• Liberator GR.V (Can) 595-X, 10 (BR) Squadron, RCAF, 1944

• Liberator GR.V (Can) 600-N, 10 (BR) Squadron, RCAF, 1943 & 1945

• Liberator GR.V BZ792-G, 224 Squadron RAF, 1944

Liberator GR V Details - 1/48 scale

This combination of 3 detail sets from Belcher Bits is recommended for use with our Aviaeology 1/48 scale "ASW Liberators part 1" decal set.

Set 1 provides a Dumbo nose radome, an alternate belly radome and a wing-mounted Leigh Light to convert the Revell-Monogram B-24D to convert it to a sub hunter.

The second features two Mk.24 "mine" acoustic homing torpedoes and four AN/CRT-1A sonobuoys. Both were used by RAF, RCAF, and USN anti-submarine aircraft through the last 2 years of WWII and beyond.

The third set includes parts to make four 250 lb depth charges as carried by RAF, RCAF and UK based USN anti-sub aircraft. Also included is a 1,500 lb air-dropped sea-mine (with either parachute pack or drum tail) as carried by aircraft such as Swordfish, Hampden, Wellington, and Lancaster on Coastal Command duties.

To kick things off we present a concise, yet complete story by noted Canadian military and aviation historian Carl Vincent.

Canada's unique "Brazilian Liberators" have been explored in various journals from time to time, but still they remain somewhat of an enigma. Except, perhaps, to the most ardent "Libo-philes".

Originally purchased as attrition replacements for the RCAF's main long range wartime anti-submarine patrol aircraft...
